Garden of the Gulls

The island of Surtsey was born as a subsea volcanic eruption, exploding from the ocean south of Iceland on November 14, 1963. The eruption continued until June 5th, 1967. The appearance of the island has afforded scientists a unique opportunity to study how plants and animals colonize new land. I joined a team of scientists studying the island to document their work. The original story, written by Hugh Powell, was published as a feature article titled Garden of the Gulls in the summer 2022 issue of Living Bird magazine. It has also been republished in Ranger Rick magazine in November 2023.
