Washington State’s Olympic Peninsula offers an astonishing array of landscapes and micro-climates in a relatively compact area. From its dramatic coast, sea stacks, and tidal pools, to fall color in old-growth temperate rainforest, to alpine meadows, glaciated peaks, and vast wilderness, it seems to have it all. Marine fog pours through mountain passes, filling inland valleys while ridge tops bask in the sun. Roosevelt elk bugle in the lush forest, home to some of the world’s largest trees. The snowcapped splendor of the Olympic Mountains provides a sublime backdrop.

Michael Frye and Chris Linder / Visionary Wild

Renowned landscape photographer Michael Frye and his partner Claudia Welsh (formerly V.P. at the Ansel Adams Gallery in Yosemite) will join Chris Linder, Visionary Wild’s resident Antarctica expert and an IAATO-certified Antarctic guide. After a comfortable charter flight across the notorious Drake Passage, our creative focus on this trip will be evenly divided between the wildlife spectacle and sublime landscape. Our route will take us to colonies of Adélie, Chinstrap, and Gentoo penguins (plus the possibility of sighting the odd Emperor or Macaroni), and along the way we will encounter Leopard, Crab-Eater, and Weddell Seals, Orcas and Humpback Whales. The dramatic landscape of glacier-covered mountains and islands rises from the various sheltered channels, dotted with immense icebergs. Join us for a unique small ship (only 10 photographers) experience aboard the Hans Hansson.

We are excited to offer an extraordinary opportunity to photograph Antarctica’s Snow Hill emperor penguin colony through a new partnership with Quark Expeditions aboard their new ice-capable expedition vessel Ultramarine. Once we get in range of the Snow Hill colony, the expert pilots of the ship’s two Airbus twin-engine helicopters will shuttle guests to the ice near the colony. While the primary photographic objective is the legendary colony of 4,000 pairs of emperor penguins and their adorable chicks at Snow Hill Island, enroute we will make stops at several other Antarctic Peninsula landing sites, including locations in the Weddell Sea that are not normally visited on Antarctica voyages. In addition to emperor penguins, we can also expect to photograph Adélie, chinstrap, and gentoo penguins, leopard, crab-eater, and Weddell seals, and humpback whales.
