Photo Essay » Feeling the heat in Ilulissat, Greenland
In July 2008, I photographed a research team studying the lakes of glacial melt water that form--and rapidly disappear--on the Greenland Ice Sheet in summer (see photos from that project here). Before and after the expedition to the nearby ice sheet, I explored Ilulissat, a town of roughly 5,000 people and 3,500 sled dogs on the west coast of Greenland. I learned from the locals how global warming has already changed their lifestyle, and what concerns they have about a warmer future. Since understanding the geography, particularly the relation of Ilulissat to the Icefjord, is important to the story, I have used GPS data to geolocate each image. Click on the images to learn about the town, the people, the ice, and climate change.
