The Arctic Ocean is remote, ice-covered, and, for half of the year, cloaked in darkness. In July 2007, an international scientific team, using unique underwater and under-ice vehicles, braved the thick, ever-shifting pack ice to plumb the secrets of the seafloor more than two miles below. This portfolio chronicles an epic 40-day journey aboard the Swedish icebreaker Oden to explore one of the planet's last remaining frontiers: the Gakkel Ridge below the Arctic Ocean.
